Abstract. Uzbekistan’s rich cultural heritage is evident in the diverse regional styles of women’s clothing. These traditional garments reflect not only practicality given the climate, but also social status and ethnicity. These regional characteristics, rooted in tradition, continue to influence contemporary fashion, shaping the aesthetics and cultural identity of Uzbek dress.
Four distinctive regions — Khorezm, Surkhandarya, Fergana-Tashkent, and Bukhara-Samarkand — each boast unique characteristics. Fabrics such as silk and cotton, embroidery with symbolic patterns, and variations in headdresses (skullcaps) and garment proportions all contribute to this regional flavor.
This article explores how these regional characteristics continue to influence contemporary clothing in Uzbekistan. We will see how traditional elements such as loose silhouettes, vibrant colors, and intricate embroidery find their way into contemporary designs. The influence extends beyond aesthetics, with the use of natural fabrics such as breathable cotton responding to contemporary preferences for comfort and sustainability.
The relationship between tradition and contemporary fashion in Uzbekistan is not simply a matter of aesthetics. As Uzbek designers continue to skillfully weave these threads, the country’s fashion will remain a dynamic force that reflects the beauty, identity, and spirit of Uzbekistan.
By exploring the enduring legacy of regional styles, this article sheds light on the dynamic relationship between tradition and contemporary fashion in Uzbekistan.
