Abstract. The research challenge presented by this study is the clear lack of software-based, specific sociological research on this topic, examining the various social aspects of youth subcultures currently existing in Russia. Furthermore, there are even fewer works by Russian authors directly devoted to the topic of specific empirical research into the influence of subcultures on the socialization of Russian youth.
The relevance of this material lies precisely in the specific sociological nature of research into the socialization of Russian youth subcultures, combining quantitative and qualitative methods (in this case, online surveys and in-depth interviews) capable of obtaining, processing, and scientifically interpreting primary empirical information on this topic.
The aim of this study, which began as a general (but not published in this article) analysis of Russian subcultures, is a sociological, theoretical, and empirical analysis of the socialization of Russian youth directly involved in the role-playing subculture.
Conclusions:
- the two studies yielded empirical results that, at first glance, appear to be mutually exclusive in many respects;
- however, the first and second sets of findings do not contradict each other in the least; rather, they complement each other, demonstrating a significant difference between youth not included in subcultures and youth included in subcultural communities, particularly the role-playing subculture;
- nevertheless, mechanically extrapolating the findings of a particular study of a single role-playing youth subculture to the entire pool of numerous and diverse subcultural youth communities in Russia seems not only incorrect, but even dangerous.
Keywords: contemporary youth subcultures in Russia; their influence on the socialization of young people; the role-playing subculture; sociological analysis using online questionnaires and
in-depth interviews
