Abstract. The article deals with the peculiarities of the emotional labor of the actors of the professional theaters in Moscow. Actors are one of the professions most subject to emotions, but in Russian sociology there is not a single notable work on the most emotional labor or specific techniques that help actors, as masters of managing emotions, cope with the possible negative consequences of emotional labor. We state a high level of emotional labor, as well as its institutional nature in the actors. Through 17 in-depth semi-structured interviews spanning 40–120 minutes, we covered a wide range of topics in the conversations and raised important questions that can arise when exposed to emotional labor. Institutional resources were found that help to do emotional work more accurately and the negative consequences of emotional labor themselves were identified, such as: burnout, imbalance between work and personal life, manifestation of the body and overwork. We set ourselves a hypothesis to understand how the practice of privileged managers of emotions (actors) can be proved on the professional activity of the emotional proletariat. It turned out that not all factors of increased emotional activity can be adopted by the emotional proletariat, because with many factors we are talking about institutional, structural differences in the conditions in which emotional labor is realized. However, the emotional proletariat is not hopeless, and we have lifted the veil of the mystery of the duration of emotional labor by our study. Conclusions are drawn about the structural causes of burnout and structural «buffers», auxiliary institutional aspects, due to the presence of emotional work is done easily.
