Abstract. Scholars have long been interested in the relationship between religion and numerous aspects of people’s lives, such as marriage. This is because religion can affect a person’s level of happiness in different ways. Some studies show that Christians are more satisfied with marriage, while others find evidence that Muslims are more satisfied. In addition, less religious people show the least satisfaction with marriage. In the present study, we examined marriage satisfaction among both sexes, as well as among Muslims, Christians and atheists, using a large cross-cultural sample. Our results show that men have higher marital satisfaction scores than women, and that satisfaction levels do not differ significantly among Muslims, Christians and atheists. We discuss our results in the context of previous research on the relationship between marriage and religion. Key words: religious affiliation, marriage satisfaction, Christians, Muslims, atheists. Religion has existed virtually since the beginning of human history. Today, it continues to play a key role in most societies. Almost 82 % of the world’s people identify with a religion. By country, only 5 % of Americans, 4 % of South Africans, 1 % of Brazilians and 3 % of Indians say they are atheists. It therefore seems appropriate to deepen our understanding of how religion affects our lives. Since religion is closely linked to a wide range of values and norms concerning relationships, the relationship between religion and family life is one of the most widely discussed topics in the social sciences. The purpose of this study was to explore one of these aspects: the relationship between religion and marriage satisfaction.
