Abstract. The article discusses the problems of prisoners’ education as a tool for their re-socialization. The aspects and problems important for the implementation of prison educational programs are analyzed: financing, training of teaching staff, the scope and content of programs, issues of motivation for learning, the willingness of society to accept the need for educational programs for prisoners. Attention is drawn to the activities of the UNESCO Institute of Continuing Education, which oversees prison education around the world. Arguments are given for the economic, criminological, and social expediency of extending prison education as a productive way to integrate former prisoners into society and thereby influence the reduction of recidivism. The concept of advanced socialization, which is promoted by the curator of prison programs in the USA, Dr. K. Zukis, is considered as one of the concepts of prison education. Since penitentiary pedagogy is a sub-branch of adragogy, the article also provides some reflections on the problems of adult education and their motivation to improve their professional level. An important factor in this area is the need for teaching staff to have competencies that allow them to cope with low cognitive interest and reduced learning motivation among prisoners. Of great importance is such an aspect as supporting an adult’s decision to continue their education, which also falls on the shoulders of representatives of penitentiary pedagogy. Some authors point out that in the educational process within the framework of the penitentiary system, it is necessary to take into account such a moment as the value content of the educational process, i.e. making sense, not just providing goal-setting education for prisoners.
