Abstract. The scientific problem of the research is that after the collapse of the USSR, the policy of preserving the ethnocultural characteristics of the Russian North began to fail and was increasingly reduced to a simple administrative and economic approach, considering the northern regions as one of the least populated Russian regions with a harsh climate, but with a huge resource of a wide variety of minerals from gold and precious stones to oil and gas. The corresponding term «Russian North» was also established, which does not correspond to the cultural, historical and socio-demographic characteristics of the northern regions. The sociological, cultural, psychological approaches to defining the concept of «Russian North» and establishing the corresponding identification of the local population practiced in the scientific literature do not meet the criterion of completeness, since they do not take into account the close relationship of three factors: the active personality, his cultural and social self-identification. The relevance of the study lies in the need to form a reliable portrait of the Russian North as a special historical, cultural and ethnographic region of Russia, the specifics of which go far beyond the administrative and economic division or geographical approach. Closely related to this specificity is the current problem of identifying the main zones of cultural and social identification of the Russian North.

The purpose of the study is to identify the main aspects of cultural and social identification of the population of the Russian North.

The scientific hypothesis of the study is the assumption of a dialectical connection between the processes of enculturation and socialization, characteristic of an individual identifying himself with the specified socio-cultural region.

Organization and methods of the study: a general comprehensive specific sociological study was conducted, including several private pilot and one main descriptive study, conducted using various sociological methods.
