Abstract. In the article, the condition of the study of the self-education problem of the school teacher in the psychological and pedagogical literature is considered. The relevance of the priority role of the professional self-education of the school teacher in the improvement of the quality of education in the conditions of the global informatization of society is substantiated. On the basis of the analysis of existing publications and scientific-methodical literature, the author clarifies the concepts of «self-education» and «self-education», reveals their relationship to the professional stage of self-improvement of a teacher, gives the opinions of famous teachers on the topic under study, singles out individual directions of self-education and self-education, dwells on the principles of professional self-improvement. In the article, the content of the main stages of the organization of the process of self-education is analyzed: self-analysis, planning, training (familiarity with theoretical material), the process of introducing new knowledge and skills into practical pedagogical activity, and analyzing the results. Revealing the content of the first stage, which consists in self-analysis by the teacher of his professional successes and failures, the author stops at the motives that influence the teacher’s realization of the need for self-education and self-education. Attention is focused on the advantages and disadvantages of various forms of self-education, starting with courses to improve qualifications and ending with individual work on self-education, on the necessity of perfecting the forms and methods of self-education of teachers. The author considers the influence of modern conditions of life in society, in particular, the digitalization of education, the choice of teachers for the form of self-education and self-education, and the expansion of opportunities for self-education. Attention is paid to the results of the professional self-education of the school teacher. The role and importance of self-education in the professional activity of the teacher is defined as a source of continuous improvement of professional skills in the modern conditions of the development of society.
