Abstract. Nowadays, there are holidays of the most diverse content: state and local, labor and sports, church and corporate. Many of them are assigned to a calendar date or more or less clearly correlated with the time of the year. Many of them stem from traditional folk festivals. The author has been studying the phenomenon of the holiday for 30 years, while he himself is the organizer of mass folk festivals. The author compares the everyday understanding of the holiday and the scientific one; understands which holiday is traditional and which is not.
Most people, if you ask them the question: «What is a holiday?», most likely they will answer: a day of rest, in which everyone is happy, having fun. Someone, thinking about it, can say that this is a day that has some historical or personal weight in life, or that this is a special date associated with a significant event or dedicated to something. The author also believes that a holiday, especially a big traditional holiday, is not so much a fun pastime, rest, as a special mood, preparation for later life.
In this paper, the author raises the question: what kind of holiday can be called traditional. He compares the holidays that fall at the beginning of November, which are celebrated in different countries, in different traditions. Despite the different rituals, they have a common orientation, which may indicate their common roots.
The author compares two holidays taking place at the end of June: «Scarlet Sails», which the city administration on the Neva has been holding for school graduates for more than 50 years, and Kupala, which he organizes and conducts himself on the basis of ethnographic material. Hundreds of thousands of spectators from different parts of the country and the world are coming to the first holiday – a grandiose spectacular performance. The other one has deep historical roots, takes place away from the noise of the city, gathers up to a hundred participants, passes in a family way.
According to the author, it is traditional holidays that are important for the socialization and health improvement of a person. They should not be brought to the level of a show, but a competent and wise policy is needed to popularize and implement beautiful folk holidays.
