Abstract. Intangible ethnocultural heritage, also called «living heritage», includes customs, forms of representation and expression, knowledge and skills passed on by living people from generation to generation. It creates a sense of identity and continuity, promotes creativity and social well-being, contributes to the management of the natural and social environment, and is one of the elements of sustainable development. The 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage is designed to preserve this fragile heritage, ensure its viability and create conditions for the full development of its potential for the sustainable development of every country and people. UNESCO’s activities in this area are aimed at supporting Member States around the world, promoting international cooperation in the protection of living heritage and creating an institutional and professional environment favorable to the protection of this intangible heritage, and what has been done in Russia over these 20 years. The peculiarity of Russia’s situation is that we have not yet ratified the relevant UNESCO Convention. The opinion of the authors of the article: the preservation of the intangible ethnocultural heritage of Russia should become a priority policy for those who are interested in the long-term sustainable development of Russia. Intangible ethnocultural heritage can be considered as a political, cultural, and social problem that requires different approaches and immediate solutions.
